Village Hall News

Health and Safety Risk Assessments.
These matters are quite simple in a village hall setting. Halls are generally low risk environments, not much more than a simple box, in which activities take place. The MC is responsible for providing a safe box and the activity provider for running their activity safely and appropriately. The model hire agreement I can supply sets these responsibilities out clearly and is very important.
The most important duty for the MC is to risk assess its hall and to take reasonable steps to mitigate any risks. It does not have to eliminate all risks. Risks include physical injury, fire and other matters like safeguarding, a further risk assessment would help in relation to financial risks and data protection.

Rural News
Small grants now available to village halls in England
Defra funded grant scheme reopens today for small grants for committee’s managing rural community buildings. The lower thresholds of £2,000 – £5,000 aim to support smaller projects.
Managed by Action with Rural Communities in England (ACRE), the fund has already awarded grants to 100s of village and community halls, helping them undertake ambitious improvements to their building.
Works undertaken or scheduled to take place include new roofs, insulation, extensions, and more energy efficient heating systems.

Rural Taskforce Work Progresses as DEFRA Sets Out Growth Plan
Defra Secretary of State Emma Reynolds used her speech at the Country Land & Business Association (CLA) Rural Business Conference last week to set out the Government’s ambition for a thriving rural economy, emphasising that “when rural Britain succeeds, the whole country succeeds.”
As part of this wider focus on unlocking rural economic potential, the DEFRA Rural Taskforce is playing a key role in identifying the barriers facing rural communities and shaping cross-government action. Kerry Booth, RSN Chief Executive, represents our members on the Taskforce, ensuring that the realities and priorities of rural areas are fully reflected as this work progresses.
