BBC Children in Need (UK)

The BBC has announced that the next funding round of the BBC Children in Need is now open for applications. BBC Children in Need provides grants for up to three years to properly constituted not for profit organisations working with disadvantaged young people aged 18 or under . Funding is available to organisations, that work with young people who are suffering from illness, distress, abuse or neglect, are disabled, have behavioural or psychological difficulties and / or are living in poverty or situations of deprivation. Last year the programme made grants of over £37 million to over 1,300 organisations working with children and young people across the UK. Projects supported include an allotment in Plymouth for children with mobility problems, a digital memory pot project for terminally ill children and their siblings who are coming to terms with death and bereavement, and a community newspaper for disaffected young people in Wales. The next closing date will be the 15th January 2009, with grant decisions and notifications in late April 2009

First Light Movies Announces New Application Deadlines (UK)

First Light Movies provides grants to projects that enable young people to participate in all aspects of film productions. Since launching in 2001, First Light Movies have enabled over 12,000 young filmmakers to write, act, shoot, light, direct and produce over 800 films. The funding is available to organizations that work with young people aged between 5 and 18, such as:
• Schools;
• Youth services;
• Community;
• Voluntary groups, etc.
Grants are available through three funding streams. The Pilot Awards which provides grants of up to £5,000 for the production of a 5 minute film, the Studio Awards, which provides grants of up to £25,000 for films up to 10 minutes long and What’s the Big Idea Awards which provides grants of £3,000 to develop ideas and stories for films. The deadlines for applications are the 14th October 2008 for the Studio Awards.
The What's The Big Idea? Award and the Pilot Awards will both reopen for applications on the 16th July 2008 with a closing date of the 16th September 2008.Applicants need to be organisations that work with young people.

Hilton in the Community Foundation (UK)

Organisations that work with young people have the opportunity to apply for grants of up to £50,000 per year through the Hilton Foundation. During 2006, the Foundation made grants totalling over £1.3m to numerous organisations including registered charities and schools for activities and projects that meet one of the Foundation’s three chosen areas of focus:
• Young People – Education
• Young People – Health
• Disaster Relief and International Fund.
Previously supported projects by the Foundation have included:
• The Palmer Junior School, which received a grant of £2,740 to help send 11 young people on a school field trip, who could otherwise not afford it.
• The Red Gates School, which received a grant of £750 for specialist equipment at the school.
The next closing date for applications is the 11th February 2009.

Funding to Develop the Sustainability of Young Social Enterprises (England)

The Adventure Capital Fund (ACF) has announced that it is accepting applications under its Business Development Grant scheme. The ACF offers a range of investments and support to develop stable and sustainable community based enterprises. The Joanies Trust (UK)

Registered charities working with young people aged 11 to 25 are eligible to apply for grants through the Joanies Trust. Each year, the Trust makes approximately 30 grants with an average value of £1,000 to support projects that offer intensive support to young people as well as those that promote preventative work, and especially those that are designed to lead to individual development through integration, work opportunities or accreditation. In particular the Trust is looking to support projects that show innovation and imagination as well as evidence of close consultation with young people in developing their project. The next deadline for applications is the 31st December 2008.

Funding for Youth Projects (England)

The Government has announced the allocation of funding made under the Youth Opportunity Fund and Youth Capital Fund. Both funds will be worth £115 million over the two years to 2008. One of the key aims of both funds is to give young people, especially young people in disadvantaged areas a voice in how the money will be spent. The money which will be ringfenced and allocated to Local Authorities and will enable young people aged 13 - 19 to bid directly for funds from their local council to improve facilities and activities in their neighbourhood. The level of funding allocated for 2006 - 07 to any single Local Authorities varies from £100,000 to £1,464,000..

School Sports Co-ordinator Programme (England)

The Big Lottery Fund has announced the final tranche of £9,244,990 under the School Sports Co-ordinator Programme. The aim of the scheme is to motivate young people through physical exercise, improving their health and contributing to increased self-esteem, a greater skill range and an improved ability to work co-operatively with each other. It will particularly benefit children in danger of exclusion from school, those who need encouragement to participate and young people with special needs....

Government Pledges Additional £184 Million for New Youth Facilities (England)

As part of its ten year Youth Strategy, the Government has announced that it will make available £184million of new money to support the development of new facilities for young people in every community. The funding will be available over the 2008-11 period. The funding is being sourced from unclaimed assets that lie in dormant bank accounts and is in addition to addition to the £495 million of continuing funding, and reinvestment of unclaimed assets already pledged by the Government. Amongst other actions, the funding will be used to support the continuation of the Youth Opportunity and Capital Funds and the expansion of the Youth Opportunity Fund in the most deprived areas as well as further support for third sector organisations with a proven track record in working with vulnerable young people so that they can expand and sustain their provision..
