New register of charities launched on 1st October 2008

The Charity Commission has launched its new-look register of charities, which provides more information on charities and in a clear, colourful and accessible way.  The Commission invites comments and feedback on the register, so take a look and see what you think.  If you look up a charity, the first thing you'll notice is the border to the charity's entry, which will be green if all of its returns are up-to-date but red if any of the documents are overdue.  The menu to the left gives you access to information on the trustees, financial history and accounts.  It's worth remembering that charities enjoy numerous privileges in return for demonstrating that their objects are wholly charitable and that they operate for public benefit, so it's appropriate that information on what they do and how they are governed is easily accessible to anyone interested.  Try out the new register at www.charity-commission.gov.uk
