What is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)?
Mental health first aid (MHFA) is the help given to someone experiencing a mental health problem before professional help is obtained.
The aims of MHFA are:
> To preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others
> To provide help to prevent a mental health problem developing into a more serious state
> To promote the recovery of good mental health
> To provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem
What is MHFA training?
The MHFA training covers the following topics:
> What is meant by mental health and mental ill health
> Common mental health problems and provision of mental health first aid for people who are experiencing depression, anxiety, panic, psychosis and suicidal feelings
> The range of effective treatments, interventions and self-help activities that support recovery from common mental health problems
> How to access professional help and support
New to Worcestershire is Mental Health First Aid Youth
This differs from MHFA in that it includes England's Child Health Care Policy and focuses on the context of mental health and well-being of young people

Travel Training 7th &8th December
University of Worcester City Campus
The course consists of two consecutive days in the classroom, with an opportunity to practise skills in the field. The programme will consist of a variety of theoretical and practical activities, to include:- an overview, case studies, initial assessment of trainee, risk assessment of specified route, task analysis, teaching road safety, teaching use of bus/train, peer training sessions, judging competence, emergency procedures, monitoring and evaluation procedures.
The course is aimed at:- Support Workers, Classroom Assistants, LEA staff, Day Centre Officers, Residential staff. Also, volunteers working in an allied field with a genuine desire to support/train individuals.
