Introduction
Platform 1 on Great Malvern Station has a lot to recommend it. Not only does it feature the architecture of a beautifully maintained Victorian station, it also has an award-winning tea room and The Training Station.
The Training Station lives up to its name. Set up as a venue for small training events and meetings, it can accommodate up to 30 people in its largest room, depending on seating layout, with training equipment such as overhead projectors, multi media equipment and flip charts can be provided according to need.
The idea came about when Community First, a county-wide organisation supporting the voluntary sector and local communities outgrew its offices at the station. For financial reasons, it was necessary to put the now vacant station premises to good use. At the same time, it was discovered that there are few places locally that offer training facilities at low cost - and certainly none with such excellent access, especially by rail. It was a challenge! Was it possible to provide competitively priced, professionally run facilities within a strict budget, given that there were also time constraints and staffing issues to overcome?
It was a challenge that suited Isobel Lindsey who changed her role within Community First and set about organising the many details that would ensure that customers not only booked once, but were keen to use the Training Station on subsequent occasions. There is now a buzz of activity as different groups break for coffee and a flurry, as a buffet lunch is delivered for an all-day meeting. Whilst the Training Station was initially aimed at voluntary organisations, it is increasingly attracting customers from other sectors, many of whom are truly surprised to find such a place on Platform 1.
The Training Station now also has a Facilities Administrator, who is available at the station to book rooms greet and provide support for visitors when on site.
