Falls Response Survey - share your views

What is a Falls Response Service?
This is a service typically provided by trained staff who can attend urgent calls from individuals who have sustained a non-injury fall. A non-injury fall is when a person falls over but is not seriously injured and does not need to be taken to hospital. In these instances a person just requires some assistance to get back up, and remain in their usual place of residence. NHS SWCCG is keen to know your views on what a good falls response service would look like.

Falls Information
Up to one in three (3.4 million) people aged over 65 and 50% of people over the age of 80 fall at least once a year. The human cost of falling includes distress, pain, injury, loss of confidence, loss of independence and mortality. Falling also affects the family members and carers of people who fall. Falls are estimated to cost the NHS an estimated £4.6 million a day and remains a major cause of injury and death amongst the over 70's, and account for more than 50 per cent of hospital admissions for accidental injury (Age UK, NICE).

The risk of falling increases with age, although not all people fall when they get older. Someone who has already had a fall is more likely to fall again in the future. Falling and the fear of falling can make some people lose confidence in going about their day to day activities, and may affect their independence. Although most falls don't result in serious injury, some falls may result in fractures, which may be difficult to recover from (NICE).
