Defra Confirms Funding for a Further Year

Government department, Defra, has confirmed that funding which supports rural communities through ACRE and the network of 38 Rural Community Councils, such as Community First, will continue for a further year.  Following warnings that the resource would come to an end, ACRE launched an on line E-petition urging Defra to reconsider.  Defra’s decision will ensure that its investment of £2.3m in the ACRE network is maintained for the coming year.  Alan Courtney, Chair of Community First said “This is a very welcome development and, although we still face substantial financial challenges going forward, this further investment will help us to maintain services whilst we continue to work towards achieving a sustainable future.  We have had a very large number of expressions of support from MPs, Councillors, local community leaders and people who have used our services. We are grateful to them all and have been encouraged to redouble our efforts to continue to provide vital and valued services to help sustain local communities".
