Community Led Planning

What is Community Led Planning?

Supporting community engagement in rural and urban communities

Community Led Planning (CLP) provides a way that local people (parishes or neighbourhoods) can develop a co-ordinated plan for improving the local community. It is all about members of a community coming together to say what’s good and distinctive about where they live, how they could work to protect and improve their local area and how they wish others to help them. Working together with local service providers this plan can then become the action plan for the community.

Community First offers community development support to enable local groups to:

  • Actively engage with residents in the local community
  • Ensure all residents have the opportunity to be involved.
  • Develop a local action plan.
  • Make sure they have the necessary skills and support to implement their action plans.

Community Led Planning can help local communities by:

  • Supporting community led grassroots projects which develop the skills of local community volunteers.
  • Developing good relationships with service providers and the parish/ward councillors to ensure that ideas are turned into actions.
  • Embedding the principles of forward planning at parish level, shifting Parish Councils from reactive to proactive mode.
  • Making sure that ‘hard to reach’ groups get involved in community projects
