Supporting community engagement in rural and urban communities

Neighbourhood (NP) provides a way for local people (parishes or neighbourhoods) to put together a plan for improving their local community. Despite the name it isn't really about planning in the usual sense. It's all about members of a community coming together to say what’s good and distinctive about where they live, how they could work to protect and improve their local area, what might be needed and how they wish others to help them. Working together with local service providers this plan can then become an action plan for the community and our experience working with local communities shows that it's a really positive way to make things happen.

Neighbourhood Planning can help local communities by:

  • Supporting community led grassroots projects which develop the skills of local community volunteers
  • Developing good relationships with service providers and the parish/ward councillors to ensure that ideas are turned into actions
  • Embedding the principles of forward planning at parish level, shifting Parish Councils from simply reacting to thinking ahead
  • Making sure that ‘hard to reach’ groups get involved in community projects
