Calor Village of the Year

The search has begun for the top villages in Herefordshire & Worcestershire with the launch of the 2007 Calor Village of the Year competition in each county. Competition organisers, Community First, are encouraging entries from every village in the two counties with a population of 5,000 and under, and the deadline for entries is April 27th. The competition is sponsored by Calor – the UK’s leading supplier of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).

Entries are invited from any organisation within a village, but should be supported by a second organisation such as the parish council, and categories cover: Community, Business, Environment and Communications.

With a simplified entry format to this year’s competitions, competition co-ordinator Nina Owen is looking forward to a good response from villages this year. She commented: “We have simplified the entry form to a mostly tick box format as well as reducing the number of categories to four, so we hope this will encourage as many villages as possible to give it a go. Entering the competitions is easy and provides an opportunity to find out about all the services and activities that are available in your village. It also brings people together in a celebration of all that’s happening as well as offering a chance to raise the profile of the community. We look forward to seeing some new faces in 2007 as well as those villages that have entered in previous years.”

Later in the year, two villages – one representing Herefordshire and one representing Worcestershire, will have the added honour of being nominated to go forward and represent their counties in the prestigious Calor Village of the Year® for England competition 2007/8. This will give them the opportunity of gaining recognition at national level as well as a share of a prize fund totalling more than £36,000. The county’s nominees to the 2006/7 national competition, Inkberrow and Tarrington, have already submitted their written entries and are now preparing for a visit from competition judges during April.

Entries to the competitions are invited from all villages in Herefordshire and Worcestershire with a population of 5,000 and under, apart from last year’s winners. For further information regarding the competitions and entry forms, please contact Nina Owen on 01684 573334, email ninao@comfirst.org.uk. The deadline for entries for both competitions is the end of April and judging will take place during June. A joint presentation event for the winning villages will be held later in the year.
