2007
Herefordshire.
The overall winner in Herefordshire is the village of Bishopswood. Bishopswood impressed the judges with its community spirit and the way in which so many people in the village are involved in building community life. The judges also noted the way in which a large number of residents are working to contribute to the community, both by providing facilities at the village hall and by giving their spare time to a variety of community based schemes. Villagers demonstrated that they provide important and well used facilities for all members of the community and that Bishopswood is a thriving modern village.
In Herefordshire, Wellington Heath has also been commended for its outstanding use of ICT and how it is used to ensure inclusivity and community cohesion.
Also commended in Herefordshire for its innovation is the village of Mansel Lacy. With a lack of community facilities in the village, residents have successfully converted part of their church into an inclusive church centre complete with modern IT equipment.
Worcestershire
The 2007 Calor Worcestershire Village of the year is the village of Broadway. Broadway welcomed competition judges to the village with a wonderful greeting from all sections of the community, and everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, was willing to say what a fantastic place it was to live in. It was also noted by the judges just how many community based organisations play an active part in the framework of local community life. Broadway is a vibrant and modern community where volunteers provide an extraordinary range of high quality and professional facilities. The judges left with the impression that the village has clear plans for the future and will continue to to be a vibrant community for years to come. The village of Catshill has also been honoured in the Worcestershire competition, as an outstanding runner up. During the judges' visit, all sections of the community gathered together in the village hall to demonstrate their projects and how they benefit communtiy life. Catshill has a fantastic sense of community cohesion and provides a huge range of activities and provisions for all age groups within the village.
As overall winners, Bishopswood and Broadway now have the added honour of being nominated to go forward and represent their counties in the prestigious Calor Village of the Year for England competition 2007/8. This will give them the opportunity to gain recognition at national level and a share of a prize fund totalling more than £36,000.
